200 Teens Visit 18 South in 2013

As 2013 draws to a close, it’s incredibly rewarding to reflect upon the progress we’ve made this year at 18 South Youth Center. By the end of 2013, at least 200 teens will have walked through the front door of 18 South. More than half of those teens had never been to the center before this year. In fact, we are on target to reach more new teens this year than we did the first full year the center was open back in 2008!

In line with this momentum, our attendance figures for this time of year are double what they were a year ago. In January of this year, we served 36 local teens. Just last month in November, we served 67 students! Part of the reason for the attendance increase is due to the support of Red Lion Area Junior High School, which allowed us to distribute approximately 1,000 postcards promoting 18 South to its students near the beginning of the school year. We were incredibly grateful for this opportunity!

In 2013, we also added five new mentors from five local churches to our volunteer staff, which doubled the number of churches that provide volunteers for 18 South. Eight local congregations now supply mentors at the youth center: Bethany United Methodist Church, Community Cornerstone Grace Brethren Church, DOVE Community Church, Family Worship Center, First Baptist Church of York, Living Word Community Church, Pleasant View Brethren in Christ Church, and Pleasant View Church.

I am beyond excited to see what 2014 will bring for all of the new faces we’re building relationships with at 18 South. Plans are in the works to take a group to a winter youth retreat in late February, and many of the teens are already excitedly chattering about our highly anticipated attendance at Creation Festival at the end of June. I am confident that God has plans for us beyond our wildest dreams!
