Summer 2014: The Whirlwind

What an incredible, action-packed summer we’ve at PTC Youth! So many opportunities to connect with the teens of 18 South Youth Center outside of our normal hours of operation came our way. Here’s a quick recap:

It all started with our Dessert Reception on June 4, which was meant to draw in the local community for a glimpse at the ways in which 18 South’s mentors have impacted the youth that frequent the center. We had a lovely evening full of desserts, live music, and a long line of teens eager to share their stories with the crowd.

Next up was our Car Wash at Enzo’s Automobile Sales in York on June 14, where we raised more than $500 towards our trip to Creation Festival Northeast. It was wonderful for the group of 12 teens who would be attending the festival to have an opportunity to work hard while greatly reducing the cost of their ticket.

We took a quick breather after Creation at the end of June and then hit up the annual Lake Party of the local Youth Centers Network on July 21. This event took place at Action Impact out in Elverson, Pa. Our group of 2 mentors and 4 teens had a blast eating burgers, paddling canoes around the lake, and jumping off the dock into the water.

A regular summer favorite is the operation of the dunk tank at the Red Lion Street Fair, which took place on Aug. 9 this year. The Red Lion Area Business Association graciously rents this dunk tank each year to help raise money for 18 South! We’ve had an influx of new teens this year and so our youth center has been packed as of late. As a result, a true family atmosphere has emerged, which means that we had more than enough help from teens who came out to help with the street fair and related activities. What a blast!

We wrapped up our summer shenanigans with a Pool Party on Aug. 17 that was graciously hosted by two of our mentors, Paul and Kim Brozovic, from First Baptist Church of York. Four mentors hauled 8 teens from 18 South to Paul and Kim’s home for an afternoon of hot dogs, swimming, and of course, several rounds of Marco Polo.

What a fabulous summer full of lovely memories and relationship building!
