Volunteers Receive Suicide Prevention Training

On Monday, Dec. 4. 2017, a group of 8 volunteers from 18 South completed a training course led by Suicide Prevention of York. These volunteers are now QPR (Question, Persuade, Respond) Certified, which is a method for detecting if someone is suicidal and then getting them treatment.

According to Suicide Prevention of York, suicides in York County have increased by 23 percent so far this year. And in October, the 18 South Youth Center family faced the tremendous loss of one of our regular attendees, Zachary Tillman, who committed suicide. While 18 South has always been passionate about teen suicide prevention, this experience triggered a recommitment to the effort. We have taken action by partnering with Suicide Prevention of York to help comfort our students, as well as provide additional training for our volunteers.
